Ellis tsland, in Upper New York Bay, opened in 1892 as the federal inspection station for millions of
immigrants to the United States. For more than 60 years, newly arrived immigrants to the United
States passed through it Today, over 100 million Americans -about one-third of the population-can
trace their ancestry to the immigrants who first arrived in America at Ellis Island before scattering to
different areas all over the country.
